UNSW Buys NanoAvionics Nanosatellite Bus for Research

UNSW will use NanoAvioncs’s nanosatellite bus for its Satellite Innovation Laboratory, providing an opportunity to expand on its R&D, education programs.

The smallsat bus manufacturer, NanoAvionics will deliver a 6U nanosatellite bus to UNSW Sydney for the UNSW Satellite Innovation Laboratory. The 6U nanosatellite bus is fully assembled and functionally tested, meaning that it is ready for research and education. Payload integration for laboratory testing, modifications, and mission operations validation will be carried out by UNSW.  

The intended payload is a global navigational satellite system (GNSS) named “Harry v2”. This will consist of 2 “KEA” GPS receivers, which were developed by the Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research at UNSW. These will perform remote Earth sensing operations using GPS reflectometry which can be used to infer sea-state, wind speed, water-land boundaries, and potentially more.

The payload will be able to host multiple experiments and will take measurements of reflections of navigation signals such as GPS off Earth’s surface, while also using navigation signals from other GPS satellites. The receivers are designed for both aircraft and CubeSat operations and are capable of recording intermediate frequency (IF) data and delay Doppler maps (DDM) with their associated metadata.
